El Toro Zoysia
is a distinct variety of zoysia japonica. El Toro zoysia is practically
identical in appearance to Meyer Z-52 zoysia; however, it is slightly
less dense and has a wider leaf blade. El Toro zoysia was patented and
introduced by the University of California in 1980.
The unique advantage of El Toro zoysiagrass
is it's accelerated growth rate. When planted from sprigs, it can produce
a complete turf much faster than other zoysiagrass varieties. Other distinguishing
characteristics of El Toro are excellent drought and heat tolerance, good
shade tolerance, and low thatch production. Early spring green-up and
good fall color make El Toro the popular choice for many turf applications.
El Toro zoysia is significantly more shade tolerant than Meyer Z-52 zoysia.
